Penetration of Sound root tantra

Homage to primordial Buddha Samantabhadra*Samantabhadri,

Lineage holder of intentional lineage of Nyingma Vajrayana Buddhism,

Teaching through the Vajra Speech of unseparable Sound*Light of Dharmata.

i.As presented in the Visual Dharma: Nyingma Vajrayana Buddhism there are three lineages of transmission of pure Dharma in ancient times and also now. With direct introduction to Sound*Light of Dharmata (Chönyid kyi rang dra) the meditator contemplates the samadhi of Sound as taught by accomplished Atiyoga master Vimalamitra . Tulku Thondup says about  the Mind transmission : “Samantabhadra, the dharmakaya, transmitted tantric teachings to the sambhogakaya Buddhas who are inseparable from him, through Mind transmission without any verbal or physical expression. In reality the dharmakaya does not express anything, but for the sambhogakaya Buddhas the tantric transmission appears from the dharmakaya spontaneously. This is known as the transmission between the Buddhas.” (1) Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche II (1904-1987) teaches about three lineages of transmission  (2) : “According to our special tradition there were three great descents of the teachings (of the secret mantra tradition). It says in the exegetical tantra of the Oceanic Magical Net : the intentional, symbolic and aural lineages are respectfully those of the Conquerors, bodhisattvas and yogins. That is to say, the three lineages to be explained are : intentional lineage of the conquerors, symbolic lineage of awareness holders and the aural lineage of mundane individuals.”

REVERBERATION OF SOUND is the root of all Buddhist Dharma . Reverberation of Sound (Dra Thal Gyur) is connected to 16 other Dzogchen Upadesha tantras . “The Mind transmission of the buddhas of three times is known as a transmission through blessings – naturally perfect blessings of all buddhas of the past and the future and of those who reside in the present. Independent of articulated words this transmission is understood and realized through the natural Sound of Dharmata.” Wellspring of the great perfection – The lives and insights of the early masters , compiled and edited by E.P. Kunsang, The Twelve Dzogchen Buddhas , An excerpt from the great history of the Heart Essence , part One belonging to the instruction section Cycle of the Heart Essence of Vimalamitra , pg 119. ๑۩۞۩๑ ཨ ཨ ཨ ๑۩۞۩๑

ii. Intentional lineage of the Conquerors (Jinas, Buddhas) is essential and unobstructed Dharmakaya, primordial purity of voidness, unseparable from Rupakaya (Sambhogakaya and Nirmanakaya). These three lineages must be understood in non-gradual way.

Let´s give a symbol : intentional lineage of the      Conquerors is the essence of the shining diamond.

Symbolic lineage of the awareness holders – bodhisattvas is the Light  revealing mandalas of peaceful and wrathful deities, emamated from Samantabhadra*Samantabhadri Buddha. Aural lineage of yogins are the rays shining from the diamond. Without the essence of that diamond which is natural Sound*Light there are no emanations of Light.

As Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche wrote: “Intentional lineage of the Conquerors is the speech of the Buddha-body of reality. It says in the Penetration of Sound: Thus in the celestial expanse of reality, there appeared natural Sound, blessed by the speech of the great All-pervader (Samantabhadra, Khyab-´jug). “ (3)

Thinley Norbu Rinpoche also describes three lineages of transmission :”Transmission of the Wisdom Mind of the Buddhas ( Tib. rGyal.ba dgongs.pahi brgyud.pa), the Lineage of the “Transmission by the Signs of the Vidyadharas” (Tib. Rig.hdzin brda.yi brgyud.pa), and the Lineage of “Oral  Transmission of Superior Individuals” (Tib. Gang.zag snan khung .gi brgyud.pa).” (4)

iii. Thus the Penetration of Sound (sgra thal-´gyur rtsa-baí rgyud) is the root (tsa-wa) tantra (rgyud) of Ati Yoga upadesha (Managde) and it should be always understood as first of Eighteen Dzogchen Upadesha tantras and not the way around. Penetration of Sound is the Root (Tsa-wa) of all Buddhas Dharma. The one who introduces the meditator to the Sound*Light of Dharma-ta, is the root  Lama (tsa-wai Lama), your root spiritual Friend. This direct and natural introduction can be very unelaborated. Therefore it is simple, natural and direct. As such it must be appreacited and respected – in the same way as we appreciate and respect primordial Buddha Samantabhadra*Samantabhadri, Vajrasattva*Buddha Locana , Garab Dorje and all lineage masters. Direct introduction to the Sound*Light of Dharma-ta is supreme Dharma door : authentic Dharma practice to primordial wisdom (Jnana, Yeshe, 10th perfection). It is supreme gift – shining diamond on the palm of your hand.

iv. Practical instructions: our research shows that very little is known and published about Penetration of Sound root tantra of Dzogchen Ati Yoga . It is rarely even mentioned in Dharma studies and in articles on internet. This shows that the understanding of natural Sound*Light of Dharma-ta is weaker with every generation. Partly because of the fact pointed out already by Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche II. in his study: Harmful influences of tobacco and drugs. Such pollutants like tobacco and drugs, with contributing factors: bad air, unclean water, meat, poisons etc – close the central energy channel and diminish natural Sound*Light of Dharmata, our innate Buddha nature. Proper way to open the central channel is by purification and detoxifying the energy . Wellness formulas of our Buddhist Wholesome medicine serve this aim successfully.

v.Colophon : May this alive Dharma teaching awaken interest for something that lies undiscovered in you, waiting to be discovered : shining diamond of Buddha nature, visible*hearable as the Sound*Light of Dharma-ta.

3.1. Questions & answers Zedkr9 Malaysia

My name is Ron and I am a Chinese from Malaysia. Here, most Chinese are either Buddhists, Taoists or Christians. Only a handful of them are Muslims unlike the Malays who must be Muslims and cannot change their religion. We have all 4 schools of Buddhism here too, the least popular being Zen. I  find Tibetan Buddhism very fascinating but it is also very complex and complicating. I was told that we must not simply chant Tibetan mantras unless they are handed down to us by a Rinpoche. Why must all the mantras be so secretive? Aren’t they supposed to be open in order to help layman in need? Do you mind helping me clarify some of my doubts here?
Also, most of the centers… we don’t exactly get a chance to talk to the Guru. So what people do is simply join in and follow the chanting sessions only. Likewise, I don’t actually know the purpose of the mantras which I chant too. Since I am told to chant, I chant … and as you can see, I chant quite a bit too everyday without missing a single day. If I really cannot make it, then I will replace the following day.
The mantras I chant are…
1] Black Mahakala [Om Maka Kiya Laiya Sowaka] – stanza and mantra [1 Mala daily each morning on empty stomach – was told the mantra works more effective that way]
– I was also informed that after chanting this, our life would gradually improve and we will beable to do well financially. But so far, having chanted more than two years, my situation is still the same…sigh! That was the very first mantra I chanted. I started out just by chanting the stanza 3 times and then proceeded with the mantra for a couple of Malas before winding up chanting 25,000 times a day for a year without seeing any results! So eventually I reduced it to only 1 Mala a day.
2] Vajrasattva [1 mala daily every morning]
3] Avalokiteshvara [Compassionate Mantra] – 21 times daily
[Om Mani Padme Hum] – 21 Mala daily
4] Om Prom Svaha [21 Mala daily]
5] Mareichi [Om Mareichi Mom Svaha] – 1 Mala daily
6] Guru Rinpoche – 1 Mala twice dailyOm Ah Hum Vajra Guru Padma Siddhi Hum
Du Sum Sang Gyay Guru Rinpoche Ngo Drup Kun Dak De Wa Chhen Poi Zhap
Bar Chhad Kun Sel Dud Dul Drak Po Tsal Sol Wa Deb So Jyin Gyiy Lap Tu Sol
Chhyi Nang Sang Wai Bar Chhad Zhi Wa DangSam Pa Lhun Gyi Drup Par Jyin Gyi Lob. May I know what Guru Rinpoche represents? What’s the purpose of reciting that mantra? Also, which Buddha’s mantra is Om Prom Svaha? I was informed that this is a very powerful mantra. Even those people who are insane can get well. But so far, I couldn’t find anyone to tell me who’s mantra that is… Could you kindly help me out? Would certainly like to get a piece of your advise…Thanks .Regards. Ronnie

Answer : Dear Friend  of Buddha Dharma, it is nice to hear that Buddhism is living spiritual path & religion  also in Malaysia.  The term Tibetan Buddhism is wrong- correct name is Mahayana & Vajrayana Buddhism. When Tibetans were still in Tibet (until 1959) they did not think about themselves as Tibetan Buddhists. After many of them came into exile to India and when they began to spread the Dharma to other continents, this term: Tibetan Buddhism – became popular. But such name is misleading. Many schollars and even some  “Tibetan Lamas” agree with this. At Buddha Dharma we are practicing & teaching Theravada,  Mahayana & Vajrayana  Buddhist path. You asked for direct answer. My answer is from that perspective. Mantras that you chant come from Sanskrit , not from Tibetan. Buddhist mantras represent Enlightened Speech of Wisdom deities : it is much better to receive empowerment from qualified Buddhist master before you start with the recitations or to practice our Visual Dharmas diligently.  It is not only reciting of mantras , as you do – but also correct way of seeing (so called visualisation), breathing and physical posture. Nowdays mantras  are not secret at all , since they are publsihed in books and on internet . What is more secret is their meaning . Reciting of Buddhist  mantras can surely help you, but you must practice the Dharma with proper motivation. With proper motivation you must obtain Refuge to Three precious Jewels first. Then you must become a vegetarian, avoiding  drinking wine , using poisons . Five ethical precepts are explained in our Visual Dharma Buddhas´s Enlightenment.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNrxtDo-oaM

Buddhist mantras are not chanted for personal prophit , althouh one´s circumstances can improve. The aim is to proceed on the spiritual path toward liberation from samsara and to accomplish enlightenment. If you wish to improve your financial situation, reduce your expenses and don´t spend money for anything  harmful: cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, meat, games, eating junk food in restaurants.  Also write down all your expenses and make regular book keeping for yourself. Save 15-20 % of your monthly income. Donate some of this monthlöy savings to Buddhist  charity. For example: we have Buddhist school for orphan children in Nepal, lead by His Eminence Sagar Rinpoche. With donating to charity your merit/positive energy will increase.

To learn the meaning of mantras  which you chant daily, study description of our Visual Dharmas : Avalokiteshvara – Buddha of compassion – for mantra OM MANI PADME HUM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dC_8PMNp-s

Seven-line Prayer to Guru Rinpoche and Teaching about Seven-line prayer : for mantra of Guru Padmasambhava : OM AH HUM VAJRA GURU PEMA SIDDHI HUM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i28fZuqKKcQ The purpose to recite Vajra Guru mantra is to become enlightened. Guru Padmasambhava is the emanation  of Buddha Amitabha. He represent the enlightened qualities and activities  of all Buddhas.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NDt5ViCjsk

For mantra of Vajrasattva study about the meaning of 100-syllable mantra -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApIARcwuAzc

The Sanskrit syllables SVAHA are not pronounced “Sowaka” as you wrote in the mantra of Mahakala. For Chinese speaking it is difficult to pronounce Sanskrit correctly, but one must improve one´s pronunciation. Tibetans pronounce Svaha as “Soha” which is also wrong.

Ad4) Om Prom Svaha :  this is some mantra for vanishing diseases. It probably comes from Hinduism. In   Buddhism there is mantra of Vajra Gharuda and other mantras for healing. This mantra should  be avoided, since it is not so essential. Most important mantras that you recite daily, are : Vajrasattva 100-syllable mantra and Vajra Guru mantra (of Padmasambhava).

Ad5) Merichi is probably Maritseye or Yellow Golden Tara. For this mantra you need empowerment or at least reading transmission (Lung) before you recite it.

You asked if Arya Tara and Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) are Bodhisattvas or fully enlightened Buddhas ? Such questions are asked often without knowing the difference and similarities between the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Who is Bodhisattva and who is fully enlightened Buddha ? Study , contemplate and write me shorter answer according to your understanding of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Sometimes I also ask questions – I don´t want to give “one-sentence” superficial answer….

At the beginning of the day- before mantra recitation, add Verses of Prayer  to Eight noble auspicious ones , as taught in the Visual Dharma. Start with English recitations and also make prostrations at appropriate times. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMJxMJPS5ZI

This will increase your motivation and bring you auspiciousness. Then recite the mantras, as you practiced until now.

At the end of recitation dedicate the merit/positive energy to all beings. May I suggest that you should also meditate in silence, in relaxed way, every evening before sleep and after you wake up in the morning. In such way you wil become more present and aware.   As diligent Dharma practitioner study more about meaning of Refuge , write notes, develop deep faith in the Buddhas and  holy Dharma . With this Dharma advice I wish you smooth progress on spiritual path toward Enlightenment.

Dear venerable  , please enjoy my questions , thank you .
Maha Brahma , Great Brahma ; two of this realm’s more famous inhabitants are the great Brahma , a deity whose delusion leads him to regard himself as the
all-powerful , all-seeing supposedly creator of the universe ( see Digha Nikaya 11 ) , and Brahma Sahampati , who begs the Buddha to teach Dhamma to the world .

Q.143 – Are Maha brahma and Brahma Sahampati the same as the four Brahma Viharas? Answer:  Brahma is the god – who in the Hindu view, created the world. When uncapitalised, the word brahma  indicates the corresponding god of any particular world,  not only the Brahma of this world.  There are Four immeasurables, cultivated by the Bodhisattvas : infinite-loving kindness (maitri), infinite compassion (karuna), infinite joy (mudita), infinite equanimity(upeksha).
Recommended reading :Dr. K.Sri Dhammananda: Treasure of the Dhamma, Buddhist Missionary society, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 1994.

Q.144 – If Maha Brahma is the creator of the universe , does he creates all things , all being minds , and all realms of existence , samsara too ?
You already answered  this by writing above : “great Brahma, a deity whose delusion leads him to regard himself as all-powerful, all-seeing supposedly creator of the universe.” How can you then ask : If Brahma is the creator of the world ? Samsara – individual samsara and collective samsara with six realms of existence, includes beings of upper realms also. Samsara is created by ignorance (read : stupidity , unawareness).

If you truly wish to understand how samsara is created, study more the Dahrma teachings related to the Wish-granting prayer of Samantabhadra. Here is auspicious link to that Visual Dharma: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W91pUTf2Jc and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtxoGSk1wJk In this answer  we are linking Theravada Buddhist Teachings with Atiyoga Dzogpa chenpo Buddhist teachings.

Q.145 Why doesn’t he create also the Nirvana ?
Nirvana can not be “created” or compounded (Tibetan: Dumache- uncompounded).  It is utterly uncreated, simple and natural, without arguing. As Shakyamuni Buddha said :
Nirvana is peace . This is 4th seal of authentic Buddhist Dharma.

Q.146 – When Brahma Sahampati begs the Buddha to teach Dhamma to the world , has he a long life until Buddha period about 2553 years ago ?
May peace, happiness be upon you always !
nutier

Brahma Sahampati asked the Enlightened One also to theach gods like Brahma Sahampati was. Shakyamuni Buddha is therefore Enlightened Teaccher of gods and men (human beings). Life span of brahmas is counted in millions of human years.

Nutier : Dear venerable  , please enjoy my questions , thank you . In these fine material planes there are no females , all are males and when one is reborn there one becomes a male and there is no attachment or emotion because there is no sex , no greed and all sensuous feelings are non-existent .
Q.147 – How to distinguish Brahmas , Devas are males if they have no sex ?
Your investigation shows how religious imaginary is discriminative toward women even in so called “higher planes of existence” ! There are Dewi also (goddesses) in higher planes, bit obviously they don´t play important roles in theistic systems . So Dewis (goddesses) are not mentioned much in holy scriptures of Hinduism , also not in Buddhism. Maybe goddesses are just like clerks or secretaries here in our human world – they do very important work , but are almost unknown to the general public
J Take this just as an allegory for  upper  planes of existence….Q.148 – If all beings living in these planes have  no attachments or emotions , can they attain Nirvana directly after death ?  May peace and happiness be upon you always !  nutier Answer : It doesn´t mean  that gods and goddesses of higher planes of samsara overcame the ignorance . Ignorance is the problem, not attachment and emotions. Ignorance is based on ego or self-centered ambitions. Many meditators have similar symptoms : self-centered ambitions. If you don´t let go of your ego or over-proportional pride (I meditate, I have done this, I made it,I practice the dharma, I succeeded and so on…) you remain in samsara, even if you do many meritios deeds. Attaining of Nirvana is attainment of

P E A C E, as Shakymuni Buddha did. Bardo state after  death surely looks differently for gods and for humans. They have different karmic traces. When we dedicate the merit of prayers and meditations, we include gods in that dedication. May all beings be soon liberated from samsara.
