Habitual tendencies of sentient beings are : arrogance, unkind mind, envy, jealousy. Those without such habitual tendencies are sages (Muni). Spiritual cultivators should repent and transform their habitual tendencies. To have such tendencies means to have wrong views. Right view means to be without habitual tendencies. With prajna / wisdom (of discernment) one can liberate oneself. One must generate Bodhicitta to counteract wrong views.
✿♥✿♥ Spiritual cultivators must be mindful of Four universal vows.

Thousands of spiritual cultivators gathered in Lei Tsang Temple in Taiwan. Many also followed Fire Puja ceremony and Dharma teaching on live webcast for two hours.

I have been vegetarian for many years for ethical reasons. I have been pursuing my spiritual quest for many years studying various religions from Abrahamic religions to Neo-pagan philosophies. When I came across Buddhism,it appealed to me a lot because of its non-violence approach. I live in Morocco now,so it is hard to find a Buddhist temple or a teacher,and I have searched the internet for information.Some of the information I found was that most Buddhist eat meat,which seemed contradictory to me. I have also studied some other religions like Hinduism and Jainism too,and I found Jainism to be appealing but hard to learn.
I truly love Buddhism but I don’t know what sources would you recommend.I know of this website but it is a bit contradictory because it mentions of Lord Buddha not being vegetarian and that it is fine to eat meat.By the way this website is http://www.buddhanet.net I don’t know if you think this is a good website to learn,and also how do you convert to Buddhism.I hope you can advice me because I want to be part of a community with similar thought. Above all I love nature,The Earth,and the animals that inhabit her.
I sent a message earlier regarding some contradictory information that I have found in one website buddhanet.net listed on the basics about Buddhism.I will attach it so you know what I am talking about.Here it is:
Buddhists should be vegetarians, shouldn’t they?
Not necessarily. The Buddha was not a vegetarian. He did not teach his disciples to be vegetarians and even today, there are many good Buddhists who are not vegetarians.
Answer of Buddha Dharma:
There is this endless confussion about vegetarianism : meat eating habit. First of all, the author of answers that appear on buddha.net should write his/her name. It is truly irresponsible that the answers on buddha.net Australia appear without author`s name. Definitely all Buddhist organizations listed in this data base don´t agree with the answers presented on buddha.net. Our Teachings about Buddhist path toward Enlightenment give precise and clear answers that are in accordance with Buddhist ethic (skt: sila, Tib. Tsultrim). It is great misunderstanding among certain Buddhists that Buddha Shakyamuni was not a vegetarian and that he did not teach his disciples to be vegetarian. What does it mean to be “good Buddhist” ? It means to truly understand the law of karma which is cause, condition and effect. Those who still eat meat only pay lip service to the law of karma and are unable to apply its teaching in their daily life. The 14th Dalai Lama ordered many times that all Tibetan Buddhist monasteries must avoid any meat cooking . It is not allowed to offer meat even at pujas or Buddhist ceremonies. All Buddhists who respect the Dalai Lama, promisssed some years ago to be vegetarians for 1 year. The hope was that in 1 year one can purify the negative karma of meat eating and become life long vegetarian. The same is true for the Kagyu Buddhist orders when the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa ordered avoidance of all meat and alcohol in Karma Kagyu temples and Dharma centres around the world. Let´s hope that Buddhists gathering in Buddhist centres will soon realise the need to become life long vegetarians. Those who still eat meat can not purify their unvirtuous karma of meat eating.
But if you eat meat you are indirectly responsible for the death of a creature. Isn’t that breaking the first precept?
It is true that when you eat meat, you are indirectly and partially responsible for killing a creature but the same is true when you eat vegetables. The farmer has to spray his crop with insecticides and poisons so that the vegetables arrive on your dinner plates without holes in them. And once again, animals have been killed to provide the leather for your belt or handbag, oil for the soap you use and a thousand other products as well. It is impossible to live without, in some way, being indirectly responsible for the death of some other beings, and this is just another example of the First Noble Truth, ordinary existence is suffering and unsatisfactory. When you take the First Precept, you try to avoid being directly responsible for killing beings.
Answer of Buddha Dharma:
The above answer is just silly .People who answer in such way learned the skilful manipulative methods of debating in certain Buddhist monasteries. Such answers don´t provide prajna or wisdom of discernment. One can avoid wearing leather shoes or leather bags , belts etc. One can use cosmetics that is not produced by animal suffering. It seems that vegans or advanced vegetarians know much more about this as Buddhists. One can also learn from them! Those who understand the Noble truth of suffering, also avoid indirect killing and don´t eat meat of sentient beings.
Mahayana Buddhists don’t eat meat.
That is not correct. Mahayana Buddhism in China laid great stress on being vegetarian but both the monks and laymen/laywomen of the Mahayana tradition in Japan and Tibet usually eat meat.
Answer of Buddha Dharma: the above answer is truly not educational . The one who wrote it, understands the Five precepts , among them not killing , only as recommendation.
Take an example in car driving: when you drive through the settlement in Europe, there is speed limit 50 km/h. This speed limit is not recommended speed, it is the highest speed that one can drive in settlement – Otherwise one does not see walking pedestrians, other cars , bicycles etc. There are high penalties for drivers who drive more than 50 km/h through the settlement.
The same is with Buddhist precepts on ethic : they are not recommended by the Enlightened ones, precepts are clear demands to reform unvirtuous karma and to create merit. Obviously this ethical principles were not taught clear enough in Buddhist history, therefore we see strange developments in those countries, mentioned above. In China many millions of Pure land Buddhist order- which is pure Mahayana Buddhism- strictly abide by eating only vegetarian or even only vegan food . In many Mahayana sutras it is written that those who eat meat are not pure Mahayana practitioners. It is written that in future times (which is also now) there will be masters who will advocate meat eating as part of Buddhist path, misleading many….
But I still think that a Buddhist should be vegetarian.
If there was a person who was a very strict vegetarian but who was selfish, dishonest and mean, and another person who was not a vegetarian but who was thoughtful to others, honest, generous and kind, which of these two would be the better Buddhist?
Answer of Buddha Dharma: The above answer simply ignore that eating meat influences one´s mind and the way of thinking. This is scientific fact already for centuries ! People who eat meat often try to disgrace vegetarians telling many lies about them : like being selfish and dishonest. Spiritual practitioners who eat meat are also very clever and that is their problem : they “know” too much and don´t want to practice the teachings about compassion and love toward sentient beings in their daily life. It is only lip service and delusion… Person who has prajna * wisdom of discernment, can not fall into the trap of such delusive speech. One must develop presence and clear seeing first, and this comes by keeping pure ethical precepts , developing Samadhi and prajna wisdom progressively.
The person who was honest and kind.
Because such a person obviously has a good heart.
Exactly. One who eats meat can have a pure heart just as one who does not eat meat can have an impure heart. In the Buddha’s teachings, the important thing is the quality of your heart, not the contents of your diet. Many Buddhists take great care never to eat meat but they are not concerned about being selfish, dishonest, cruel or jealous. They change their diet which is easy to do, while neglecting to change their hearts which is a difficult thing to do. So whether you are a vegetarian or not, remember that the purification of the mind is the most important thing in Buddhism.
Answer of Buddha Dharma : Enlightened Buddhist master Nagarjuna said that by eating flesh of sentient beings is like eating one´s mother flesh. By doing so one accumulate immense negative karma. Yes, purification of mind is important in Buddhism, but one must start by descending with the view while ascending with the conduct”, teaches Lotus-born Guru Padmasambhava who was the emanation of Buddha Amitabha . To ascend with the conduct means to avoid eating meat, drinking alcohol, lying, cheating, stealing , avoiding drugs and sexual misconduct. By doing so one is purifying the unvirtuous imprints in the mind-awareness. Only talking about pure heart etc etc. is not enough.
