1.1.With 100-syllable mantra of Buddha Vajrasattva we begin this week Alive Dharma teaching, dear Friends  of Buddha Dharma. One of the ways to recite this sacred  mantra is taught in Visual Dharma connected with this teaching. 1oo-syllable mantra has outer, inner and secret meaning. Outer meaning is written along with the recitation. Contemplating inner and secret meaning of Vajrasattva Buddha´s mantra will help us to write down next teaching, entitled “Beyond ego-centric ways”. If you have insights into that meanings, please send them to be included. Wishing you successful recitation of Buddha Vajrasattva´s mantra together with  Creative comments, great rating, favouring and embeding this important Visual Dharma to multiply your merit/positive energy and wisdom. Together we pray and meditate for inner and outer peace . Dharma Art photo on WordPress and MySpace blogs shows 100-syllable mantra encircling the planet . Sarwa mangalam * All blessings

1.2. Buddhist studies bring  insights of H.E. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche – why it is important to translate the Words of the Buddha into English (Buddhist heritage project).

*****Thank you for sharing your videos : ven. Mangala Konchok Norbu will answer your post during December , adding verses from The Art of Peace .

1.3.During past week there was remembrance of global human rights (Dec 10).Few writings of today´s teaching are dedicated to this important project. Congratulations to US President Barack Obama – Buddha Dharma´s friend  on youtube – for receiving Nobel Peace prize 2009. World without nuclear weapons will be more secure, compassionate and enlightened world….

1.5.Week of climate change conference (Copenhagen) ! Everyone can do something meaningful to reduce personal carbon footprint . The best way is to empower yourself and become vegetarian : raising animals for bloody food is responsible for 20% of climate warming. Everyone who eats meat is responsible for that . Wise citizens of Gent (Belgium) decided to avoid eating meat every Thursday. May all who read this message  follow these noble examples. Swiss Ban Minarets: Is This About Women’s Rights or Wronging Religion?

Reply : OM  MANI PADME HUM, dear Friends  at Change.org Religions must adapt themselves to new environments where they wish to progress and benefit beings ! Muslim community in Slovenia – European union- does not have demands that big minaret is incorporated in their new Muslim community center which they  wish to build in the capital city. We saw exact architect plan of it on the international conference, organised by Iscomet – International scientific conference – Minorities for Europe of Tommorow, financed by European commission and held in the city of Maribor, Oct 2006. This shows us clearly : in some countries Muslim community has adapted to new environments and in some countries Muslim community can not adapt themselves – or don´t want to adapt themselves- to new environment. Mostly this depend on the religious leader who is  responsible for the religuous community. Some are more progressive as others !  We certainly don´t want to see religious communities living in geto like environments, discriminating women, forcing them in marriages or even killing them if the don´t obey ! Such cases are well documented in Germany and described  in books.  To come out of the traditional Muslim  religious laws (Sharia) is certainly difficult for conservative Muslims;  conservative Christians , conservative Hindus or conservative Buddhists have the same problems with their so called patriarchal religious  laws .  To say European institutions don´t promote religious diversity, is basically wrong . Religious diversity is well promoted in legislatures of different countries .In Slovenia we have advanced law about Religious freedom, accepted by the parlament – with great difficulties and with years of previous discussions. This religuious freedom must only be put into practice.  In practical life we observe that Europeans  are not well educated about different religions, not educated from unbiased point of view, because school education don´t offer enough programmes with education about different religions. There is also not enough interest to improve general ignorance about this subject in school curricullums. Because of general ignorance about different religions- mass media report in provocative and unbiased ways, to attract readers. This is also question of journalist ethic !

I hope that this portrait give realistic and optimistic insights how world religions (Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and others) must adapt themselves to new situations of 3rd millenium. Adaptation does not mean indoctrination or integration with loosing the essence of religions, which is WISDOM and COMPASSION, based on deep Faith, either in the God, Buddha … Religious extremists don´t have Wisdom and Compassion, they have violence and aggression in their minds and actions, hate speech toward others because of religuous intolerance, racism and fear .

Council of Europe (Strassbourg)  created international convention against internet crime already in 2001 !This convention is prohibiting hate speech based on racism or religious intolerance, when it is pointed at concrete persons . Respectful and compassionate dialogue is wellcome.  With this in mind there can be a lot of creative, compassionate exchange of ideas : HOW TO DEVELOP  RELIGIONS OF THIS WORLD TO BENEFIT BEINGS, to make them peaceful, wise and compassionate toward themselves and toward others.

4.1. Translating the Words of the Buddha

Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche Gives Urgent Call To Translate Entire Buddhist Canon To English

Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche at the conference for Buddhist translator in Bir , India: March 2009

Rinpoché said that, among the Buddhist culture, the Kangyur is widely used as a “merit-making object”: monasteries will buy a copy only for it to be stacked in the shelves. “If offerings are made, the text will be read out loud, but little effort will be invested in understanding the meaning of each word.”

“While paying homage to the Word of the Buddha is a powerfully meritorious spiritual act, the Tibetan habit of using the Kangyur solely for this purpose is neither to be admired nor emulated: in fact, it’s a big mistake.”

Rinpoché added: “Every religion has an original holy book – for Christians, it’s the Bible, and for Moslems it’s the Koran. For Buddhists, our root holy books are the Sutras and they are of vital importance, because what Buddha taught us must always be the final word on any given subject, not what we find in the Shastras (ancient Hindu commentaries on Buddhism) – and definitely not what’s to be found in the Tibetan commentaries.”

Rinpoche said that Buddhist cultures today preserved and propagated the work of their own lamas, and have forgotten the Buddha’s Sutras. Such cultures often promoted the teachings of their own teachers far more than those of the Buddha, he said, – “and I have no trouble understanding why Tibetan Buddhism is sometimes described as “Lamaism”.

Very wise and objective article indeed. We appreciate it´s unbiased approach, well known from the teachings of Dzogsar Khyentse Rinpoche whom we met in March 1994 . We are esp. looking for the authentic translations of Eighteen Atiyoga Dzogchen tantras into English, beginning with the Penetration of Sound root tantra. . These precious Tantras are true Heritage of mankind and must be traslated into English soon. The problem is that there are very few translators with true contemplative experiences who could translate them in authentic, non-intellectual way. Tibetan lamas also consider them so secret, that almost nobody of us (so called Westerners) has enough merit to understand them. When everyone will understand that in the Buddha All-encompassing wisdom there are no Easterners or Westerners, there will be much more compassion and right effort to benefit beings by translating the Words of the Buddha .As Guru Rinpoche prophecised : There will be perverted practitioners who will treat the dharma as merchandise. At that time all of you who obey my Words do not neglect ten Dharmic activities…” (From Guru Padmasambhava´s Jewel spike Testament). Copying Buddhist scriptures (and it´s translations) for free distribution – not selling them – is first Dharmic/enlightened activity which must be practiced and encouraged.
In this sense we all wish swift fulfillment of this important project :
Together we recite the Verses to the Eight Auspicious ones (by Mipham Rinpoche) for the accomplishment of these noble aims who will certainly benefit many beings.
May dharmic activities of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche meet with great success*****

Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche wrote :

“As followers of Shakyamuni Buddha, I think the best thing that we can do is what we in Tibetan call dzin-kyong, to protect, uphold, and keep the teaching alive. That’s our job. And not only one or two teachings of the Buddha, but every one of them, every single one.”

Source: Khyentse Foundation: December 2009 Communiqué

Note: We rejoice that also other Buddhist masters and practicing Buddhists think about protecting, upholding and keeping the teachings alive. The best way to do this is to serve the teachings of Budddhas by promoting/practicing ten enlightened activities as advised by Buddha Padmasambhava. May this noble examples inspire every practicing Buddhist to accumulate merit and wisdom by practicing ten dharmic activities, not selling the dharma !

4.2. Questions & answers :

nutier France

Dear venerable Sir , please enjoy my question , thank you .
Yama heaven , yama devas live in the air , free of all difficulties .
Q.119 – What is the meaning of yama devas ?
Yama heaven is one of heavens in the desire realm (Sanskrit: Kamadhatu) , the heaven of constant joy, located above the heaven of 33. …The life span of beings in this realm (yama devas) is 2000 years, each day of which corresponds to 200 years in human world.

Q.120 – Is yama raja ( king of yama ) the same as yama devas ?
Yama raja (yama king) – lord of Yama heaven – is regarded as the judge of the dead and the ruler of hells.

Q.121 – If they are free of all difficulties , are they also free of all bad deeds ?
May peace and happiness be upon you always ! nutier

Heavenly beings are not free of all difficulties. When they die, they experience  immense suffering which they can not change. When their merit is exhausted ,  they are reborn in lower realms of samsara. These beings still transmigrate, although their life-span is very long – from human perspective.

Note: Three questions about  Tushita heaven will be answered next time.
