Happy  Vesakh 2009 to more than 600 millions of Buddhists around the world, celebrating Lord Buddha´s enlightenment and parinirvana. Today is Dharmachakra day according to the lunar calendar of Buddhist lineages from Tibet.

All blessings from our 9th Atiyoga Dzogpa Chenpo meditation retreat on the “Dragon island” wih self-arisen Footprints and Handprint (see Visual Dharma: Pada) in Adriatic sea, Croatia, Europe.

It was dry season on the island and the Mediterranean vegetation showed first damage of dryness. But is was raining and the bushes and beautiful pine trees recovered their natural green freshness. Together we meditate and pray for inner & outer peace on the planet. This afternoon we will have Collective meditations and prayers (as every Sunday since 1988 from 4-5 pm GMT+1 or according to your local time) on the  shore of the crystal clear emerald sea. We will reach very solitary places after 20 minutes of walking meditation.

“The body is created by human karmic energy-human life is determined by actions in past lives.

Q 87: Does karmic energy create spirit and soul ?”

Being born as a human being with all capacities is great privilege. Think how much more beings are reborn in animal world as insects, fishes, birds etc.. Being born as human being means that one is reborn in upper realms of samsara (humans, demi-god and gods). Yet majority of people doesn´t travel the spiritual paths and the Buddha Dharma path, because they don´t think about the impermanence of life. They live mostly unconscious – unaware life, never thinking about going for Refuge to Buddha, His Teachings and to the Assembly of Virtuous Friends (Sangha). You say : “Human life is determined by the actions in past lives.” This is too fatalistic view. Buddhist view is optimistic . Actions in past lives surely influence the present life, but there are virtuous actions (pali: kusala karma) and non-virtuous actions (akusala karma). Many uneducated writers often wrongly use the word karma as a kind of treat. But karma can also be good karma : like good karma of practicing the Buddha´s teachings or good karma of teaching pure Dharma.

Does karmic energy create spirit and soul ? After reflecting on the above you will find the answer about spirit and soul in the Visual Dharma: About Buddhism . May your understanding of the Buddhist path of enlightenment bring you peace , joy , prosperity and happiness.

RELAXATION MEDITATION – Awareness of the Body

Assume a posture and position that is comfortable and that will allow you to rest for a longer period without discomfort.  A cross-legged posture with a straight back is recommended.

Take a deep breath, holding it for a few seconds and then slowly let it go.  Repeat this a few times.  This helps to release tensions and helps in relaxation.

Remember  –  you have been working and struggling your whole life.  Give yourself a chance to relax.  This is your chance for quality time for yourself so all other maters must be left aside.  Let them outside the door when you come into this room.

Just relax.

Leave all cares and worries aside.

Leave all anger, resentment or aversion aside.

Leave all thoughts of revenge or retaliation aside.

Leave all enemies aside.

Leave all thoughts of family, loved ones and friends aside.

Leave all thoughts of work and business aside.

Leave all responsibilities aside.

Simply relax and let go of everything.

Just relax and let them go.

Stay and remain with yourself one.

Remain within yourself.

Do not venture your mind outside.

Holding your own presence of mind, turn your mind inward.

Be aware of your own body.

Keeping attention on your own body, be aware of the body.

Be aware of the bodily functions that arise in your field of awareness.

For example:-   Be aware of your breathing.

Keep awareness of your breathing.

Be aware of its quality  –  its length, quality, rise and fall of the chest,

rise and fall of the abdomen,

Just simply aware.

Do not follow or fixate.

Do not try to control the function.

Do not reject.

Simply be aware and relax.

Just relax………  relax …………. relax.

Relax without doing anything with the mind.

Let go of trying to do anything.

Simply relax………  relax …………. relax.

If the mind wanders to other matters, simply return to one’s meditation again.

Just leave other matters aside.  Let them go and return to one’s meditation.

Simply relax and be aware.

If you like,  you may count the number of times you are breathing, starting from 1 to 10,  and then start all over again.  This may calm the mind down and helps focus it.

And then return to being aware of one’s body and bodily functions again.

Simply relax and let go.

Let go of all cares and worries.

Let go of all matters.

Return to your awareness and relax.

ATIYOGA RELAXATION

After we applied Relaxation meditation – awareness of the body, so beautifully presented by Shifu John  Chow, we reflect on the essential meaning of relaxation on the Atiyoga Dzogpa Chenpo Buddhist path of Great completeness or Great perfection. All-knowing (Kunkhyen) Longchen Rabjam (1308-1363) was one of the most eminent Buddhist scholars of Nyingma Vajrayana Buddhism. Among his many written precious Dharma works there are Three Cycles on Relaxation (Ngalso Korsum), consisting of three root texts (Tsa-wa), three summaries-garlands (Phreng-wa) and three auto commentaries – chariots (Shing-ta) and three meaningful commentaries (Don-khrid) or instructions on practice, totally fifteen treatises.

Three cycles on Relaxation are :

1.Semnyid Ngalso- Relaxation in natural state of mind : root text in 13 chapters.

2. Gyuma Ngalso – in 18 chapters.

3. Samten Ngalso – in 3 chapters.

To develop Relaxation in natural state we begin to nurture six perfections or paramitas, so beautifully described in Dharma verse by Longchen Rabjam in Semnyid Ngalso .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcGgQvL0zvY

See related Visual Dharma. “Sem” is ordinary, samsaric mind. “Nyid” relates to the nature or heart. Nature of Mind : Sem-nyid. When we relax in the Sound*Light of Dharmata, our Ultimate nature, we know exactly what is the Nature of Mind and how it is. As the Chan/Zen saying goes : “The one who is drinking pure water knows exactly what taste it has !” Master Longchenpa is Omniscent Lord of Dharma (Chö-gye) : from the nature of his enlightened Mind-Awareness all his wonderful Dharma works arose like the rays of the sun, always shining. One of his Dharma names is Drimed Odser or Stainless Radience.

Buddhist Chi Kung energy workout is great support in Atiyoga Relaxation. This essential workout takes you only 10  min : it is meditation in movement where relaxed breathing supports the flow of energy.

Vajra breathing with three Lightsis another great support for Atiyoga relaxation : sit in a comfortable position with straigth back. Slowly inhale white light, seeing white shining syllable OM on your forehead. Hold the breath for a while, seeing red light or red shining syllable AH on your throat chakra . Exhale with blue shining light, seeing blue shining syllable HUM in your heart chakra. Exhale long and in a relaxed way. The meaning of sacred syllables OM AH HUM is explained in Visual Dharma : Teaching about 7-line invocation .

In short : there is always time for Dharma practice. Don´t say that you don´t have time for breathing ! Relax in Vajra breathing during the day, to strengthen your energy and to proceed on the spiritual path inward.

When we practice Kunzang Gongpa Zhangtal or Wish – granting prayer of Samantabhadra, we recite : “Relax in natural state, thus mastering the natural state of awareness and accomplish five wisdoms…”

Those who practice extensive sadhanas of meditational deities (Yidam practice) must always practice in relaxed way, to develop spaciousness within and to obtain “yogic response” more swiftly. With correct relaxation all noble qualities of our Ultimate nature (Dharmata, Chö-nyid) become visible in one´s purification process.

When we intone sacred letter A, we relax and turn our attention inward to hear naturaly liberated Sound*Light of Dharmata …A… our Ultimate nature, continuing all the time, timelessly. Even when we don´t intone A, innate Sound is present. To return and relax in that Wisdom Awareness is Atiyoga Dzogpa Chenpo effortless meditation. Ringing of the Bell …..In silence become aware of naturaly liberated Sound*Light of your Ultimate nature…. Very simple !

All-knowing Longchenpa wrote about the meaning of Upadesha-Managde : Innermost secret cathegory (Sang-wa La-med) teachings of Dzogpa chenpo :

“In essence (No-wo), as it does not depend on words, it does not rely on the wisdom of analysis. In nature (Rang.zhin), as it is direct realisation, it does not remain in views of mental analysis. In character (Tshan-nyid), as it is the perfection of the four visions, it doesn`t have expectations for the attainment of three Buddha bodies and five primordial wisdoms. Because in this practice, one actualizes the primordialy and spontaneously accomplished result in this very lifetime.”

May this Dharma illuminate everyone Buddha nature within and without, bringing Relaxation, peace and joy to all beings on this Dharmachakra day in the Saga Dawa month of Lord Shakyamuni Enlightenment and parinirvana. OM AH HUM   SVA HA
