Have we already met before ?

The Sound of Dharmata is unimpeded continuation where lives are shining jewels on the string of necklace, offered to the Wisdom deity.

Around summer 1983 I was in Munich , encountering an Indian shop with very nice Asian shoes. They were ethnic, of green color with red ornaments. I did not know that this are Tibetan shoes and I began to use them because they were very comfortable. But it was very unusual to wear such shoes in Europe at that time. Ayu Khandro (1839-1953) must have been walking all over Tibet in such shoes when she was on her religious pilgrimages with her Vajra Friend. For me she was the emanation of White Tara.

In the same city I came across a store with Asiatic literature and ritual objects. Although it was very expensive, I bought the Vajra and the Bell and put them on my altar. They were very sacred to me and I did not even touch them for a long time. But when I began to use them  it felt very naturally to hold them . Even after 25 years I still use the same Vajra and the Bell. Tsewang Dorje Paldron-Ayu Khandro used such rituals instruments for many decades of her very long life. Five years continued from passing away of Ayu Khandro and my birth in Slovenia (at that time part of Yugoslavia), Europe. Nobody was looking to find me, although Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche came to live in neighboring Italy around 1962. I was always waiting that somebody comes and take me away. Tibetans are very careless and usually they don´t search for reincarnations of female Buddhist masters. But search teams were sent out to find reincarnations of almost every possible and impossible male Buddhist masters! After so many years of waiting that somebody comes and find me, now when I grew up physically and spiritually, it doesn´t really matter that nobody came! If somebody would search for my emanation and if I would be discovered by Tibetans, it would most probably mean great obstacle. Such obstacles happens to many Tulkus. One can study Testimonies of Tibetan Tulkus-A Research among Reincarnated Buddhist Masters in Exile (1). Many Tibetan Tulkus were very critical about their system of recognizing Tulkus. Many of them did not even want to belong to such system any more, because they could not fulfill their Dharma work in such unjust post feudalistic system! More contemporary research must be done about the role of Tulkus in globalised world of third millennium.

Many years ago I said to some female astrologer in a clairvoyant dream : „I am Bodhisattva from Tushita.“ It is very natural to be strict vegetarian because Buddha Maitreya will first teach not to eat meat and not to kill animals. Every vegetarian should treasure Buddha Maitreya in his/her heart. Maitri means compassion. My Dharma Advice for everybody beginns with : first of all become a vegetarian! Later you will understand spiritual Truths which are far beyond ordinary awareness of meat eaters!

Historical connection :

Yes , there are a lot of historical connections with Buddhist masters in Tibet who now live all over the world. But more important as to discover such historical connections is to have trust (2) in ones´s wisdom awareness . If somebody gives you a title of Tulku (3) he could misunderstand it that you now  belong to him. If you don´t work according to his expectations (selling the Dharma as many nowdays do) , he could „remove“ such title from you, not knowing you any more. As if we were in the army! But you must know yourself. If you don´t know who you are, you will be always conditioned by others. You will be like a puppet. Famuous Buddhist mahasiddha in Tibet, Drukpa Kunley made many jokes about such situations. One can read them in his biography : The Divine madman. Which doesn´t mean that he was mad- he was extremely wise and courageous !

Female Buddhist masters in ancient Tibet generally did not have much properties. They were not landlords or owners of great monasteries. When they passed away, no physical properties remained after them. There was no labrang or support group. So who would be interested to find their incarnations ?! One can almost say : No property – no religious title !

In third millennium times are changing. Many awake people in this globalized world understand the importance of gender equality (4). Buddhism is spiritual religion, capable of adapting to new situations and circumstances. It should not be a religion which would remain known only by the fact that women have been greatly discriminated !

In March 1994 Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche arrived at Ljubljana airport, carrying with him eight Treasure Vases according to the project : Siddhartas intent for world peace.  When we met for the first time, he just asked directly : Have we already met before ? I was surprised at such question. Later I was thinking that Khyentse Rinpoche was just telling one of his jokes by asking such question. But there is some truth in asking : „Have we already met before ?“ Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo(1820-1892), one of previous incarnations of Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche (born 1961) , was one of most important Gurus of Ayu Khandro (1839-1953). During his White Tara Initiation he gave her the Dharma name : Tsewang Paldron. Now, in March 2008, 14 years after this question I can say : Yes, we already met in ancient Tibet…“

Shortly after seeing the movie Little Buddha , where H.E. Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche (5) was Buddhist advisor to Bernardo Bertolucci, I had a dream : „At the inner court yard of the Buddhist monastery at Paro in Bhutan, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche and I knelled down on the floor and the crowns of our heads touched.“ Similar scene is found in the movie Little Buddha, near the end of the film. I was very impressed by Khyentse Rinpoche´s teaching at the Adriatic sea side in 1994 : Meditation in action. He was very critical toward Buddhism, but also very humorous. I remember him teaching : „Those Lamas and those Rinpoches have most dangerous „battlefields“. It is called the booby-trap.“ While I was translating his teachings into Slovenian, I did not know at that time the true meaning of a „booby-trap“. Today the meaning is much clearer!  Rinpoche is courageous Bodhisattva, reaching wide audiences with his Buddhist movies and teachings.

On 8th day of the 2nd lunar month (dedicated to Arya Tara and Medicine Buddha), in March 1994, he gave me the Refuge name Tara (Liberation). It is from the view of that Liberation where enlightened courage is invoked. As his father Kyabje Thinley Norbu Rinpoche writes in his Dharma book Magic Dance – the display of the self-nature of five Wisdom Dakinis :

„I bow to my own Wisdom Mind

which is my best Wisdom teacher,

the source of all visible and invisible qualities…“

True Dharma practitioners follows authentic Guru for a long time before he/she understand the above Dharma about bowing to one´s own Wisdom Mind as written by Kyabje Thinley Norbu Rinpoche.

Besides such historical connections I realized that I came back to this world

to uphold endangered Atiyoga essence lineage : Self-liberated Sound of Dharmata.

Ayu Khandro spent more than 50 years on solitary retreat near the river in East Tibet,

mostly in dark retreat (and inner Light & Sound).

There is natural continuation of the Sound of Dharmata.

2. Such trust in one´s wisdom awareness is also confidence (Tib. Deng). It is similar to the second & third statement of Atiyoga Dzogchen master Garab Dorje with the meaning to continue in one´s natural state.

3. Tulku is Buddhist term in Tibetan language for Nirmanakaya. We follow Nyingma lineage of interpretation of three Dimensions or kayas : Dharmakaya (Chöku), Sambhogakaya (Longku), Nirmanakaya (Tulku). To be the Tulku is not a hierarchical  position, but a function of compassion and enlightened energy for all beings.  This term is translated in Chinese language  as Living Buddha.

Description of the term Tulku as it is published in Wikipedia (2010) is incomplete (too limited only to Tibetan tradition). True Nirmakaya transcends every race , nationality etc.

4. Just before publishing this Dharma treatise on internet I actively took part on  the pannel discussion about Gender equality and empowerment of women, which is 3rd goal of United nations Millenium plan . Panel discussion took place in the government hall in Ljubljana, Slovenia, EU  on March 18, 2009. Three female ambassadors took part in educating about gender equality , namely from Denmark, Finland and Norway.

5. This Dharma treatise was sent to H.E. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche in 2008 via email.

    Many many years ago I realized rebirths of Tibetan teachers were occuring here in the west and slowly this has since been recognized. This is a difficult path for the rebirths, who quickly realize they “belong” to no family, race or tradition. Your story resonates with many and is an inspiration.

      Belonging to “no family, race or tradition” in samsaric sense is actually pure Buddha Dharma.
      We belong to Buddhist family , either Padma, Ratna, Karma, Vajra or Buddha Family ,
      as taught by Buddha Padmasambhava. Also in samsaric sense it is good to be
      reborn in democratic countries with no support for feudal system. Then we can teach and
      promote Gender equality and empowerment of women , Universal education as part of Millennium Goals of United nations.
